Democrats need to abandon their practice of assuming, up front, the absence of any consequences or changes - "We'll never have the votes, nothing will happen to Trump" - and then to working backwards to argue against testimony, investigations, or oversight of any kind.
First, it wipes out the entire system of oversight completely. It's true that the GOP can often obstruct efforts at accountability to a degree, but that's not the same as being totally nonexistent. That's the difference between a single rogue party, and a totally corrupt society.
Second, this reasoning makes inevitable the exact failure it predicts! In reality, it's impossible to know when political winds will shift. The powerful often look invulnerable until the exact moment they aren't. But they'll ALWAYS prevail if they're never challenged.
