Several people have now pointed out that what the ADA actually promises is reasonable accommodations, not an identical experience to the able-bodied. This is true. But!
1. Not everyone knows that.
2. Anyone who has ever had cause to rely on the ADA for any reason knows that not every retail employee is an expert in the nuances of ADA law.
3. Most of the people carrying these cards don't know that, and...
4. Retail employees are already being asked to risk their lives for minimum wage so we can buy groceries/toilet paper/whatever. Someone who walks in with one of those cards is spoiling for a fight. They WANT a confrontation. They WANT to own the libs.
They have also been out and about without a mask, meaning they present more of a threat than someone who's been taking reasonable steps to avoid infection.
We've already had one case, in the UK, where someone said "I have COVID" and spit on a railway worker who was asking them to follow the rules. The worker developed COVID and died. If someone shoves one of those cards at a store employee...
...I don't blame them for going "okay, whatever, man" and walking away, rather than taking on the massive personal risk of pushing the issue.
The people who think they need to avoid discomfort SO BADLY that they want to carry these asshole cards and risk everyone around them are the problem, not poor Marlon on door duty who doesn't have a way to stop them coming in.
