okay here are my thoughts on today's meeting & vote in which the Chicago Board of Ed voted (4-3) NOT to end their contract with the Chicago Police Department.

"safety" discourse. ageism. radical inspiration. lanes.
first, most important thing is: we need to continue expanding the discourse on safety vs. security.

cop with gun who inspires fear, can break up a fight and might tase a student = security

social workers, jobs, resources to address underlying trauma and prevent fights = safety
It truly saddened me to hear Black and Latinx men speaking about the intracommunity violence we face in Chicago who seem to truly believe that fear, surveillance, and guns in our schools are the only solution to that. our kids aren't monsters. we need RESOURCES.
we need to confront the framing of security vs. safety, and need to be vigilant and persistent in asking what safety REALLY looks like and how we get there. we can't let up on that. because that is a key disconnect here.
folks are ageist and it shows. young people were protesting outside of board pres Del Valle's house; young people called in and made their voices heard. board members referred to hypotheticals & their own experiences rather than listening to the young people actually speaking.
Miguel Del Valle made a comment, thanking @CTULocal1 for organizing the young protestors outside his house. tuh. young people organized themselves and one another and adults. they have spoken for themselves and will continue to speak for themselves.
as someone who has witnessed the awful exclusionary way Board meetings are conducted, i was SO inspired & cried happy tears that young people flipped the script & USED the virtual format by having someone sign up on the speaker list to bring in COLLECTIVE voice via a mic check.
this monumental meeting came together because so many people worked in concert in their different lanes. from direct action and protest to political leadership that Elizabeth Todd-Breland, Amy Rome & progressive alderpeeps showed to researchers who pulled together the evidence.
this mountain will move. it will move. I believe that.

here's my thread about the meeting itself. i'm gonna go finish prepping my class for tomorrow. https://twitter.com/eveewing/status/1275826529461821443?s=20
