Let's talk about SNAP! What is it? Who does it help? What can you do to support it? #SNAPFeedsKids 1/
SNAP is short for, the supplemental food assistance program. This federal program provides supplemental benefits (funds) to those who meet eligibility requirements. These benefits can be used on food and beverages, and there are restrictions on what can and can't be purchased. 2/
Who's on SNAP? A majority of recipients are children, elderly, and the working poor. SNAP responds to need, and is one of the most effective programs to address food insecurity in this country. The program is an entitlement program, and expands as people need it 3/
This is an important point. With unemployment rates at record levels due to the global pandemic, people need federal assistance to make ends meet. NO ONE should have to worry about putting food on the table, and children are the most vulnerable. #SNAPFeedsKids 4/
There's a misconception that SNAP is misused, or taken advantage by "welfare queens." This term is racist, and is often used to describe BIPOC on the program. SNAP has 1 of the lowest fraud rates for a federal program. 6/
38 million people in this country rely on this program. Many of whom are children. #SNAPFeedsKids The average benefit for a family of 4 is $448 in FY20. This would roughly equate to $1.30 per meal, per family member. This is a SUPPLEMENTAL program and supports people in need. 7/
Congress needs to ACT. SNAP remains one of the most effective tools to fight child hunger. In the best of times, SNAP benefits don’t go far enough in helping families feed their kids. That’s why, in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, we need stronger benefits. #SNAPFeedsKids 8/
ACT NOW. Lend your voice to kids in need! @nokidhungry has made it easy to reach out to your members of Congress and ask them to increase SNAP benefits in the next coronavirus relief package. https://bit.ly/37AotEs  9/
