I just attended day 2 of my high school's 4 day social distance grad ceremony. And it's clear that the advantages of doing a grad this way may outweigh the disadvantages.
If we ever see a post COVID world, there will be a lively debate about doing grad this way again.

As far as I can see, there is one major disadvantage of the social distanced grad: You miss out on the communal experience.
But in a post COVID world, you could still have a big SafeGrad party afterwards.

The biggest advantage of the socially distanced grad: Equality. Grads are celebrated one at a time with a small audience of their family. Nobody comes away feeling like it was not about them.
Another major advantage from the POV of grads and their loved ones: Total time spent at SD grad: about 20 minutes. A big grad like the one at my school is 2 hours ceremony plus 1 hour lineup plus pandemoniac reception. Probably 4 hours including parking troubles at either end
Related to the time factor is stress factor. There is so much less stress in a ceremony done slowly, in 5 minute increments, over days. Less stress for grads and for teachers/ administrators.
On top of the lessened stress: there is time in the SD grad to redo things if they mess up. One grad went across the stage, an important family member came 2 minutes late, and they were able to just redo the crossing of the stage for that family member.
I heard a Vice Principal say to one grad, right after they got their diploma: "What do you want to do now? Do you want to jump? Do you want to throw your hat? It's your moment. You can do what you want."
There is NO TIME for anything like that in a 400 person grad.
