Legislation in the 1980s & 1990s set the stage for modern-day incarceration. It should not be a surprise that locking up immigrants was part of the calculus in expanding the criminal punishment system. #DefundThePolice #AbolishICE 2/10

The Reagan admin began the so-called “War on Drugs” which rly meant the war on black, brown, and poor ppl. Things like mandatory min., abolishing parole in the fed. system and even removing student aid for formerly incarcerated ppl, were established. #DefundThePolice 3/10

The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 & 1988 created heavy reliance on local police for identification, targeting and incarceration of people for immigration purposes.This law also codified mandatory detention. #DefundThePolice #AbolishICE 4/10

But expansion didn’t stop there, the Clinton admin pushed for the expansion of mandatory detention (to include even more ppl who were subject to this law) and facilitated even more info. sharing between immigration enforcement officials and state/local police. #AbolishICE 5/10

Most people in immigration detention will never be able to fight their deportation from anywhere other than a cage. 6/10

Because these laws rely so heavily on local police departments, which target black people the most, black immigrants are especially vulnerable to deportation. 7/10

In 2014, 14% of ppl detained by ICE faced removal because of the criminal punishment syst. Egregiously, 50% of all Black detained migrants faced removal because of the criminal punishment system. They are also less likely to be released on bond. #AbolishICE #DefundThePolice 8/10
