Wilm, a few weeks ago we said transparency is non-negotiable and we meant that. ⁣

Today, the City announced the termination of three WPD officers after an investigation into conversations that used hate-filled, racist, and completely inexcusable language.

Thread.
The conversations were filmed on a patrol car’s in-car camera and were found when a supervisor was doing a routine inspection. ⁣
As a result, the 3 former employees will be ineligible for rehire in the City. The North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission will be notified of their behavior. This commission determines whether or not an officer can maintain their state certification.
We will also consult with the District Attorney’s Office regarding their suitability as a witness, any bias they may have shown towards criminal defendants and potential criminal charges.⁣
We are outraged and sickened by these comments, but we will move forward to make Wilmington a better place for all. ⁣
Chief Williams has outlined a plan for police reform including: ⁣
•Meeting with every employee at the WPD during the month of July;⁣
•Engaging in mandatory Implicit Bias training throughout the agency;⁣
•Launching a cultural education series through small group dialogues;⁣
•Including citizens on police hiring boards⁣
•Increasing community engagement opportunities;⁣
•Assisting council with the exploration of a Citizen Review Board. ⁣
