Talking with Kevin crystallized a lot of thoughts for me about the hiring practices in tech & design: https://twitter.com/keevinnee/status/1275592715305021442
How do you know who you’ll work for? The person that will “manage” your success?
The person you’d be reporting to is often the “final boss” in the interview process – one of the last conversations that take place in an already decontextualized process. https://twitter.com/keevinnee/status/1275592715950895104

How do you know who you’ll be working with? The people who will help you grow your skills?
Interview loops can be filled with people seemingly “representative” of all the different parts of a company – yet seldom feature the people you’d work with daily. https://twitter.com/keevinnee/status/1275592716588441600

How do you know what you’ll be working on? The projects that will set the direction of your practice?
Hiring conversations (particularly at big orgs) focus deeply on candidates – but have a lack of definition or visibility into the problems you’d focus on. https://twitter.com/keevinnee/status/1275592717272154113

Ultimately, the answers to many of these questions are often obtained by… asking these questions.
Navigating all the implications of potentially working somewhere can seemingly only be done by talking with many people and reading between a lot of lines. https://twitter.com/keevinnee/status/1275592717888745472

I recognize that these are generalized problems, not practical solutions.
But hiring in design/tech is problematic in many ways (& in many places) – especially for those entering the field.
It’s especially broken for those not in overrepresented groups. Listen to them the most.
