I think what happened in Madison last night clearly crossed a line. Assaulting State Senator @TimCarpenterMKE was, in particular, a truly abhorrent act. People got out of control and made some really regrettable decisions. 1/
But I think it is worth noting that protesters in Madison specifically expressed concern over inaction at the state Capitol. https://twitter.com/DanRShafer/status/1275773462087446529
You’re all probably sick of me tweeting about legislative inaction at this point, but this can’t be overlooked in this larger discussion: The Republican-led Legislature has not passed a bill -- during a simultaneous pandemic, recession and historic protest movement -- in 70 DAYS.
In the week following the police murder of George Floyd, Black legislators like @StateSenLaTonya revived calls to pass law enforcement reform bills that had been denied a public hearing by GOP leadership since 2017.

Three years and no public hearings: https://twitter.com/DanRShafer/status/1266831183914110976
Days later, @GovEvers called on the Legislature to pass law enforcement reform bill AB1012: https://twitter.com/DanRShafer/status/1267873957656616962
In recent interviews about the #BlackLivesMatter policy fight, I was told repeatedly that the inaction from elected officials after events like the unrest at Sherman Park led directly to the protests happening now. https://recombobulationarea.substack.com/p/black-lives-matter-the-urgency-of
On June 9, the Legislative Black Caucus called for a special session on justice reform: https://twitter.com/DanRShafer/status/1270448410626338816
Evers responded 10 days later when he and @TheOtherMandela called for the Legislature to take up a new package of “policing accountability and transparency reforms.” https://twitter.com/DanRShafer/status/1274010456357814273
Protesters have been in the streets in communities all over the state of Wisconsin for nearly a month. The vast, vast majority of protests have been entirely peaceful, raising important issues, expressing the need for real change, and calling for urgent action.
None of this appears to have moved Republican legislative leadership, which includes zero Black representatives, a single inch. They have ignored all calls to action over the past 30 days.
So if “violent protest is the exact opposite of how change will occur,” as @repvos said today, how exactly *is* change going to occur in an environment where all calls for reform are completely ignored? https://twitter.com/lkwhite/status/1275816032796631043
Many of last night’s actions were awful. I think most would agree (and have agreed) that it was the wrong response.

So, what is the right response?
