Dear Catholics: Please put in writing in any kind of healthcare documents you prepare (e.g. durable power of attorney) that you wish to receive the last rites from a Catholic priest if you are in danger of death.
It is tragic how often practicing Catholics become elderly or sick and die without the last rites because their non-practicing children don't call.

You may assume that the priest will know, but this is often untrue.
You may be moved to a different town. You may be taken to a hospital out of town. A new pastor may be assigned who doesn't know that you always came to Mass years ago when you were healthy. Etc.
Sometimes the children call because that's what their parents would want, but often not.

Put it clearly in writing!
