1/ Brazil´s Senate is set to vote on June 25 on a bill against "fake news" that threatens freedom of expression, association & privacy. If approved, it would be a terrible precedent for other countries considering similar overbroad and abusive laws.

2/ The bill orders internet companies to track the chain of all forwarded communications. This would create a massive database that can be easily misused for political purposes, to track journalists’ sources or to criminally persecute people for their opinions.
3/ The bill requires internet companies to collect users’ ID and cell numbers to open messaging & email accounts. Accounts would be suspended when a number is cancelled for non-payment. The bill would create giant databases & make it harder for poor people to use the internet.
4/The bill makes it a crime:
- To create or share content that allegedly endangers "social peace" or "economic order," without defining those terms.
- To be a member of an online group that shares defamatory messages, even if the member has not created or shared those messages

5/ The bill prohibits “ridiculing” political candidates. When it does occur, a judge would determine the identity of the candidate “who benefited” from the ridicule & order that candidate to pay up to US$1.9 million. The bill would effectively ban satire & irony during elections.
6/ @davialcolumbre, president of #Brazil's senate, should cancel the vote and allow for significantly more time for a broad discussion, including civil society, of a new bill that doesn’t sacrifice basic rights.
