The equipment, allied services and lab can receive and process all tests and treatment in a timely manner. The primary care centres and GPs are well funded and equipped. Seamless transfer of referrals and results takes place through an EMR and unique patient identifier.

Those needing tests have them done quickly, with rapid discharge, across the hospital system. If in need of a bed they can move quickly from ED to the ward.

Rostered periods would not exceed 24 hours. A post-call rest day is guaranteed. Research facilities are resourced, supported and applauded. Holiday leave is accounted and planned for, and maternity leave so that staff don’t feel they are leaving colleagues unsupported. /7
I could go on and on with this.

So as doctors we go to work every day to work in an environment where our knowledge,skill-set,training are vital but leave us with the endless, gnawing worry for the ppl that don’t make it/8

The ones that don’t get into care, don’t get their scan, or test on time, their necessary pain relief, operation, chemotherapy.
But we go there anyway, not for thanks, or praise, or false applause in times of hardship, when most ppl are scared to go out of their front door.

So when somebody runs for election and is honoured by the voters, appointed to a seat in the Dáil, we would expect them to want to be involved in government if they can be.

To attend, to advocate, to sit in government if possible and to take the tough decisions, unafraid of the inevitable negativity, the loud-voiced naysayers, the fickle voter, and the next general election.

But the essential thing is to know that we have fought a good fight, and delivered the best care we could, or the best laws, or the best services.
