Aaron Judge is a top 5 player?!(Absolute Nonsense)
THREAD TIME
Judge has played (4) MLB Seasons...he has accrued these stat lines:
2016: 27 G -0.2 WAR (negligible)
2017: 155 G .284/.422/.627 8.3 WAR
2018: 112 G .278/.392/.528 5.1 WAR
2019: 102 G .272/.381/.540 4.6 WAR

The whole argument, that I have seen all over Twitter, is based on Judge’s 2017 season...not only was that 3 years ago but Aaron Judge is now 28y.o. Here’s a list of player with higher WAR in the last 2 seasons Judge’s age 26 and 27 seasons.
There’s 20 better in ‘18+’19
There’s 20 better in ‘18+’19
But how good was Aaron Judge’s 52 Home Run 2017...and what are the odds he can repeat?!
Here are WAR Totals 8.3 or higher in the Last 5 Seasons:
‘15:
9.3 Harper
9.3 Trout
8.7 Donaldson
8.6 Kershaw
(Arrieta won CY Young with 7.0 WAR in 2015...but that’s a different story

This isn’t a hate column on Aaron Judge. It’s purely proof that he is not a TOP 5 Player in Baseball...
So what have we learned??
Trout is #1...no doubt about it.
Mookie is #2...also no doubts.
(those are just accepted as fact)
#3 is the Best player in New York!.....

Jacob DeGrom the b2b Cy Young in the NL has 20.1 WAR over the course of Aaron Judge’s career.
He is #3.
#4 is a former MVP, Christian Yelich has 20WAR over the past three seasons. Better, Healthier, Younger. Yeli is #4.
#5 Max Scherzer 20.4WAR, still better @ 35y.o.

#6 is Anthony Rendon 19.9WAR now firmly in his prime.
#7 is Alex Bregman had 19.5 WAR* and he’s younger/healthier than Judge.
#8 is Chris Sale who racked up 19WAR in the 3 szn’s prior to his injury. If they both get the benefit of the doubt on injuries I’ll take Sale.

#9 Belli @ 24 just won NL MVP with anywhere from 7.8-9.0 WAR depending on how you value his GG defense. He is on a better career trajectory and was generally considered Top 5 after last szn.
#10 Acuña was #1 ranked in Fantasy on some sites in 2020, ahead of Trout. ‘Nuff said.

#11 Jose Ramirez. The guy with an 8.0 WAR szn in 2018 and only .3 less WAR than Judge over the last 3 szn’s. He’s younger and overall better outside of what happened early last szn.
#12 Irony time. Gerrit Cole had 6.0+ 7.4 WAR in the last 2 szn’s which is 3.4 more than Judge.

#13 Aaron Judge a NY super star. I will admit IF he can stay on the field and IF he can get back to 2017 production he could be Top 5. But the odds of it happening and other younger stars not passing him by is slim to none. He’s been the 13th best player in MLB during his career.
