i read these yes. Here’s her argument as I read it. I will respond.

1) Discuss the desire for cis women to conform with gender, to become their gender, with cosmetic surgery. Position this as neoliberal, born exclusively on a human-capital self investment framework.
This is incorrect and ahistorical to start with. Capitalism and commodity medicine have shaped desire and how desires are satisfied (or not) with commodity consumption, but body modification, particularly gendered, is ancient.
People have been performing tattooing, piercing, scarification, foot binding, circumcision, and numerous other procedures to modify bodies, often in gendered terms, to conform with a social body ideal.
This doesn’t mean we never examine it critically. It does mean her argument attributing this desire exclusively to capitalist mode of production is objectively false. Influenced, shaped, but not caused, not created by.
This is relevant when positioning socialism and the decommodification of the body as capable of eliminating these desires. It is also relevant when positioning body modification in pursuit of an ideal as neoliberal and self-exploitative (bad).
