Or better yet, give the role to the original Short Round actor, Jonathan Ke Quan. I just wrapped production on a film (pre-quarantine) where he plays one of the leads and he is just as funny, sweet, and empathetic as he was as a kid. https://twitter.com/mangiotto/status/1275639507883343873
Plus he is a kick-ass martial artist (black belt in tae kwon do) so you know he'll kill it on the action scenes. (our film is an action film so I can confirm he can throw down)
Lastly, I'll add, when Ke Quan came in for our audition he told us it was his first audition in decades. He told us a heartbreaking story about his post-Goonies life where all of his white co-stars were getting auditions every week, while he was lucky if he got 1 or 2 a year.
He eventually realized he wasn't going to make it as an actor and so he went to school to learn how to work behind the scenes. He has since had a fascinating career doing everything from being on the stunt team for the first X-men movie and the 1st AD for Wong Kar Wai.
Anyways all I'm saying is, Hollywood, you fucked by throwing away this talented, charismatic, hilarious actor's career two decades ago. With a new Indiana Jones movie on the way, the least you can do is give the people what they want. Give Short Round the comeback he deserves.
