I loved college. Before I could even apply, i already knew I was going to @LifeAtPurdue because my sister graduated from the school of nursing during the Drew Breese era & she let me know what to expect - I was excited...(1/7)
What she couldn’t tell me is that my experience might be tainted by acts of bigotry that also might go unpunished. I don’t blame her, she knew how bad I wanted it. "Bigotry, racism and hate are the antithesis of what Purdue University stands for and are not welcome here”...(2/7)
-Purdue spokesperson Tim Doty. Welp, unfortunately that was NOT my experience, Timmy. #MyPurdueExperience included being a 17 year old freshman on campus and walking to McDonald’s while a truck with 3 white students drove up and yelled “NIGGER” then sped off 11 years ago...(3/7)
...4 years later, as I’m preparing to graduate from the Krannert school of management, #MyPurdueExperience also included wrapping my head around the fact that my esteemed university allowed students to deface Dr. Cornel Bell’s portrait by writing “NIGGER” on it...(4/7)
Sad to say, I believe the only form of “change“ resulted in add’l cameras. Without additional policies including anti-racist ally training and stricter punishments for acts of racism and bigotry, I fear that the next “rare creatures” attending the campus...(5/7)
...also won’t feel supported. By speaking on #MyPurdueExperience and demanding more progress around creating an inclusive environment, conducive for students of all races, I hope to avoid tainting any minorities experience and promote more growth...(6/7)
If your Purdue experience was like mine, you probably enjoyed the majority of your time on campus but that doesn’t excuse them from allowing racist behaviors and bigotry to go unpunished.
