Couldn’t stop thinking about the recent New York Times’ food section article on fruit in Thailand (h/t @maxfalkowitz). I did a fairly thorough but by no means final breakdown of why it so insidiously perpetuates white supremacy + colonialism on IG stories https://www.instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE3ODc5ODI4MTEzNjY0MjMz?igshid=s5dn9v3918zh&story_media_id=2338540073559857485
I did it to help people think critically about what they’re reading and to be more accountable for what they accept as true or fair. This ain’t about attacking the writer, nor NYT. It’s about noticing how easily we accept racist rhetoric. We gotta address this madness everywhere.
Meanwhile just for kicks... I have had a fair number of New England apples 🍎 that are disappointing in flavor and bland, not sure that’s a reason to take a swipe at “American fruits” for a foreign audience... the power and reach of these narratives have impact.
