seeing a LOT of dudes tweeting shit like "now that I'm reading these stories about what happens to women in wrestling, I think I'm done with watching wrestling" and am super curious where they're going for entertainment next. video games? comics? I have some bad news.
wrestling has been fertile ground for predatory behavior in ways that other things have not, that's true. but the solution is to make wrestling better and safer, not abandon it so the only fans who remain are the people nitpicking about international age of consent laws.
you aren't going to find a thing to like that will be naturally safe from abusive or exploitative people. abuse and exploitation are deeply embedded in our culture. it's what our economy is built on. the idea that switching hobbies will help you escape it is laughably naive.
check the speaking out hashtag and you will see a maddening combination of people talking about the horrific shit they've endured and then RollinsDude82 saying "believe women. thank you for speaking out. good luck changing things. bye!" I'm pissed!!!
btw there are plenty of people who are fed up with wrestling and bailing out of exhaustion in ways that seem totally legitimate. I'm really only mad at the ones who have clearly never thought critically about anything they consume before and think they can find a non toxic fandom
I'm also just mad!!! I'm mad in general!!! I edit a wrestling section for a video games website! my friends work in comics and comedy! I'm very, very, very angry!
multiple people replying to me with "marble racing" and I really just think you don't get it. I don't care if it's local theater or bird watching or the fountain pen subreddit, there's no hobby inherently "pure" enough that it's immune to predators
