A lack of imagination stems from:
1) American exceptionalism;
2) a lack of education, particularly world history;
3) the corporatization of media leading to ⬇️ in both the breadth (eg, local) as well as the depth (investigative reporting, foreign correspondents) of news sources.
America has been left with a dumbed down population in which 1/2 are trying to return to a mythical past #MAGA and the other 1/2 spent their childhood consuming other people’s imaginations (via tv & other distractions) instead of exercising and developing their own.
Both groups are desperately trying to make sense of a world which is becoming

increasingly dangerous,

increasingly complex,

increasingly global in scope.

And ALL are suffering from a lack of inspiring leadership.
Mr. Snyder also spoke about the shared sense of VALUES required for a strong democracy, for example:

1. People shouldn’t kill other people w/o a reason.

2. People should have a sense of their own history , a record of who victimizes who.
*Race plays a 🔑 role in justice since racism blocks many legal reforms that would help both Black & White alike.

*Trumpism has made plain how our worst instincts have been pandered to for too long.

*Society can be judged by how it treats the least of these @UniteThePoor
3. Relatedly, statues are memory politics, not history itself. They go up & get taken down as exercises in the very human impulse toward expressing the values that exist in a particular zeitgeist.
