A lack of imagination stems from:
1) American exceptionalism;
2) a lack of education, particularly world history;
3) the corporatization of media leading to
in both the breadth (eg, local) as well as the depth (investigative reporting, foreign correspondents) of news sources.

America has been left with a dumbed down population in which 1/2 are trying to return to a mythical past #MAGA and the other 1/2 spent their childhood consuming other people’s imaginations (via tv & other distractions) instead of exercising and developing their own.
Both groups are desperately trying to make sense of a world which is becoming

3. Relatedly, statues are memory politics, not history itself. They go up & get taken down as exercises in the very human impulse toward expressing the values that exist in a particular zeitgeist.
You can’t have history w/o TRUTH TELLERS, witnesses who record the horror.
Without them all you have is tragedy.
