there’s something very unsettling about watching officials announce huge spikes in cases and also plans to push forward with reopening. it feels almost dystopian, like this is making you guys really sick so let’s keep doing it!! but officials have always known this would happen
the plan with reopening has always been to do it carefully and try to reduce — not eliminate — the number of people who will fall sick and die of coronavirus. there will always be a trade-off, and that’s what we’re seeing now. the hope is that the surges won’t be too huge
the criteria for what merits shutdowns and closures will likely differ from county to county. but in general, officials are trying to prevent the hospital system from being overwhelmed, so hospitalization numbers are the metric to pay attention to as we reopen the economy
