Here's the thing about the video game industry: MAYBE a field centered around an escapist medium that most people discover during childhood attracts a disproportionate amount of individuals who have issues behaving like adults and/or coping with reality (myself included)
This is by no means making excuses for the behavior of these individuals, just an observation. I've met tons of wonderful, fun, imaginative people working in games. I've also met a slew of disasters, jerks, and people, for lack of a better term, who have rats in their brains.
The whole idea of "game journalism" is perverse when you consider that it's finding and disseminating facts about fantastical non-existent microcosms. Do you know how many fish are in Skyrim? There are no fish in Skyrim, Skyrim is not a real place. It is made of math and light.
The people who make these fantastical non-existent microcosms are actual, existent people and should be recognized as such - but I think some people would rather focus on the fantastical and non-existent microcosms, because they're simpler and easier to figure out than reality.
Again, to clarify, because a website with a character limit is a terrible place for nuanced discourse:

I'm not defending anyone. I'm making a general observation about the deeply problematic industry I work in, which by no mean excuses anything.
