A thing I think nobody is really talking about: the video game industry (and tech in general) is mostly a collective of orphans who moved far away from their families for jobs and ended up latching on to a bunch of untrained, growth stunted managerial men as paternal figures.
We looked to these men for guidance and direction and we received the same level of love, hate, and abuse we might have been used to with our own fathers at home, thus ending up normalizing a lot of the abuse that came with that.
Couple that with historically low pay and a forced reliance to deal with said abuse out of fear of losing our financial security and rent checks and you have a bunch of people putting up with a bunch of toxic shit that they never should have had to deal with to begin with.
This can start to be alleviated in a number of ways:
- Mandatory managerial training across the board
- Elevating more women and marginalized voices
- Dismantling the "bro culture" that dominates so many workplaces
- Increasing pay
- Creating clear pathways for career growth

Lastly, maybe we should minimize or (outright stop) allowing hugs/hugging at work & work functions since there are much better ways to convey human emotion and that don’t involve wrapping your arms around somebody?
While we’re at it, let’s stop calling our coworkers “a family.”
