Today @EnergyCommerce is holding an incredibly important hearing on #disinformation. We @publicknowledge, specifically @lisahmacpherson, have been tracking this issue since the beginning of COVID https://misinfotrackingreport.com/
We also have a blog post that highlights our policy solution for #disinformation that also helps fund local journalism https://www.publicknowledge.org/blog/the-pandemic-proves-we-need-a-superfund-to-clean-up-misinformation-on-the-internet/
In response to today's hearing we also sent a letter to @EnergyCommerce and #subcommtech highlighting all of the work we have done on these issues https://www.publicknowledge.org/documents/public-knowledge-hearing-letter-to-house-energy-commerce-on-misinformation/&sa=D&source=hangouts&ust=1593095875614000&usg=AFQjCNHfeG_Kdfqi8XxvC-3Vn_8GigKN3A
What however is most important to keep in mind during this #disinformation hearing is that there are REAL harms that come from #disinformation especially from COVID and from voter disenfranchisement
I specifically want to highlight the remarks on voter disenfranchisement and the targeting of Black people from both @GKButterfield and @RepLBR. These harms are real and need to be accounted for
If you want to read the report that @GKButterfield was referring to here is the link from the Select Senate Intelligence Committee report on the 2016 election https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Report_Volume2.pdf
Also @RepLBR makes what I think is the best point about Facebook which is "Facebook stands out as the most irresponsible platform" even though it is the biggest
