computational analysis of 1970 feminist blockbusters shows Dialectic of Sex only book besides The Black Woman to focus on race, but OH BOY how Firestone does it is awful While not exactly ignored in the literature, it certainly isn't discussed every time she is cited
so since i like to yap about the politics of citation and we are about to be beset by 50th anniversary puff pieces about Firestone 1. every time you f name drop Firestone, add in Toni Cade Bambara and indicate the Firestone's racism is just sexism extend argument was WRONG WRONG
for bonus points, add in Hortense Spillers' take down of Firestone, plus Angela Davis' more recent reflection which attempted to counter the hagiographical eulogizing at the time of Firestone's death.
and ofc you should cite Davis' earlier critiques of Firestone as well, but I do love that she was one of the few that countered the major media eulogy frenzy about Firestone at the time of her death.
and FFS do not use the formulation I RELY ON FIRESTONE EXTENSIVELY but here is my "difference alibi" (thank you Clare Hemmings for this fab phrase) footnote acknowledging her analysis of race was flawed.
