Yes, there are some rabbit holes and gross places on Twitter, but it's just like being out in the world, you find your communities. There are so many excellent academic & professional communities/networks on Twitter- this thread is about connecting to people within them.
Academics who "try out" Twitter make lots of user errors- they follow the biggest orgs & names in their field, their friends, and post paper announcements, self-promote, & retweet random political stuff. They are overly professional & show little personality. This is not the way.
Start with a profile pic & description of who you are/what you do. Be specific. When you follow someone they are likely to check out your profile to see what you're about & what you're tweeting about.
