With #DiplomaPrivilegeNow being back in discussion it seems like a good time to recirculate our collection of op-eds on the subject. Special thanks to @DiplomaPriv4All for the idea. Follow this thread for more.
First, our own Brittney Zeller, a graduating @PittLaw 3L and JURIST's 2019-2020 Deputy Managing Editor, wrote about the frustration recent grads across the country have been experiencing with all of the uncertainty around the 2020 Bar Exam: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/03/an-open-letter-to-the-national-conference-of-bar-examiners/
The ever-prolific @brianlfrye wrote a piece in April challenging the legal profession to embrace change in this time of an actual pandemic that we live in and grant universal diploma privilege: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/04/brian-frye-diploma-privilege/
Recent grads from @UCILaw, @emilydotgov and Allyssa Scheyer wrote this piece arguing it is not only wrong to require a bar exam of grads, but it is also inhumane and unethical for the public. Emily is unfortunately still studying for the Kentucky Bar: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/04/croucher-scheyer-diploma-privilege/
Ryan Aloysius Smith, a 2020 grad from @TempleLaw, also echoed the call for diploma privilege in the name of providing legal aid resources to those affected by #COVID19: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/04/ryan-smith-pa-diploma-privilege/
Another @UCILaw grad, Nafisa Ahmed, and a @IUMaurerLaw grad, @____emilyyyyy, specifically addressed the need for Diploma Privilege for Law school graduates in California where over 4000 grads take the bar every year: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/04/ahmed-blase-diploma-privilege/
Students @SaadatiSoto of @Harvard_Law and Pilar Escontrias of @UCILaw teamed up with @SarkarLaw to call for diploma privilege while specifically challenging the idea that Bar Exam measures competence as so many like to claim: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/04/saadati-soto-escontrias-sarkar-bar-exam/
Finally, Matt Wagner, a recent grad of @CMLawSchool, wrote about the specific need for diploma privilege for Ohio grads in his piece here: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/04/matt-wagner-diploma-privilege/
If you liked this thread, 1) support diploma privilege - there are links in some of these pieces and I'm sure @DiplomaPriv4All would be happy to provide more recent ones and 2) we would be happy to consider additional pieces on this topic. DM us or email [email protected]
Update: We got some brand new op-eds as a result of this so we're going to add them to this thread!
Sarah M. Anderson of @Oregon_Law wrote an Open Letter calling for Diploma Privilege in response to a local Oregon publication which claimed students are asking for a "free pass" on the bar exam. It's a great piece. Check it out: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/06/sarah-anderson-open-letter-diploma-privilege/
@LegitConcerned and @BarPetition collaborated to write this piece on the terrible and dangerous situation that prospective Florida Bar Exam takers are facing in a month. They had to write anonymously due to potential employment retribution: https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/06/fl-bar-exam-petition-organizers/
