Folks, something big is coming to @CityofSanDiego council next month, the city’s energy Franchise Agreements. Check out this intro video, and let me explain why this is a BFD… #BetterFranchiseDeal 1/
The city is trying to reach its legally binding 100% clean energy goal by 2035 or sooner, and this deal determines whether we will have a willing partner in that effort, or continue on with the status quo #BetterFranchiseDeal 2/

Unfortunately, the status quo has not worked for San Diego families. Not only do we pay the highest rates in California, but we also have to fight our utility tooth and nail for any progress toward our climate and clean energy goals. Some examples... 3/ https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/energy-green/sd-fi-sdge-rates-20181012-story.html
Our current utility fought to force us to pay nearly $400 million for their wildfire damages, which cost billions, destroying homes and lives. Thankfully, advocates and the courts put a stop to that. 4/ https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/energy-green/story/2019-10-07/u-s-supreme-court-rejects-sdg-e-appeal-to-pass-379-million-to-ratepayers
Our utility then went on to flagrantly violate the terms of the current agreement to save their shareholders money and leave taxpayers with a $36 million bill, which the city is suing for to move a key climate resiliency project forward (PURE Water). 5/ https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/energy-green/story/2020-01-15/san-diego-sues-sdg-e-for-35-6-million-over-water-project
And then there was that time when our utility tried to undermine local solar for families and businesses, trying to up the cost by 400%. Thankfully advocates squashed that and convinced the powers that be it was a bad idea 6/ https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/energy-green/story/2020-03-17/utilities-commission-rejects-sdg-e-proposal-to-nearly-quadruple-minimum-monthly-bills
And now we find ourselves in another debacle over undergrounding, with the utility trying to charge the city millions in undocumented cost overruns, so much so, the City Attorney is pleading for the council to reign our utility in 7/ https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/government/city-attorneys-office-says-sdge-is-overcharging-to-bury-power-lines/
So, what do we do? For the first time in 50 years we can demand a #BetterFranchiseDeal! The agreements are expiring, and @sdclimateaction and a growing coalition of business, community, faith, and labor orgs are demanding a better deal 8/

The city needs a deal that ensures our utility will work with us on our climate and equity goals, will invest in our communities (inclusively and meaningfully…), and have real accountability, transparency and cooperation. #BetterFranchiseDeal 9/
This isn’t the time for a sweetheart deal for SDG&E or any other utility. The City cannot afford another Ash 101, skydive purchase, or other
debacle. Our future is on the line. Get the job done right @CityofSanDiego #BetterFranchiseDeal 10/ https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/government/berkshire-hathaway-courts-san-diego-threatens-sdge-monopoly/

Next steps? For now, be sure to check out my recent blog post on the Franchise Agreement, linked below. We’re also going to have a webinar next Monday (stay tuned for details). Thanks, SD. #BetterFranchiseDeal 11/fin
