Some peers asked me about how I transitioned to a different practice area after articling. I started implementing these strategies last August. While the economic and social climate is tougher, I hope that sharing my experience will be helpful.

1. Find out where the relevant bar gathers. Do lawyers attend events hosted by the Canadian Bar Association, the Advocates' Society or other social events?
I attended CBA Competition events and webinars every month to 1) connect with people 2) learn about industry trends, take notes and ask questions! Some memberships can be expensive. Ask your law firm if they cover fees, and email the organization to ask about student discounts!
2. Use your network as a resource. Did you take a class or participate in a moot that sparked your interest? Reach out to your professors and law school alumni. Ask them to refer you to lawyers practicing in the area.
I also cold emailed lawyers asking to chat for 10-15 mins. From there, I was referred to other lawyers in the area. Send thank you notes and keep in touch!
3. Write on LinkedIn. You may not be an expert in the area, but you have a unique perspective on your journey to getting there.
