I tweeted a response to a call for unagented writers yesterday with a suggestion that people who get offers find their own agent instead of taking suggestions from the publisher. And a couple of people have said essentially "Not everyone knows how to find an agent"
Here's the thing, publishing is a business. If you are going to sign a contract to publish your work, the person representing you should be someone who makes your success a priority. You need to be your first advocate & that means doing some research on your own.
You should be on QueryTracker, Writer Beware, you should be hopping into things like #pitmad & whatever agents you find that you want to query? Google them. Ask friends. Talk to their current clients. Most agents will take you if you already have a possible deal. So vet them.
I understand that getting published is a dream, but it is also a career. This is literally going to be the business that pays you. Make sure you tend to it.
