Yesterday during the lecture on Whiteness in #Academia by Dr Kevin T. Henze & @drcegreen, Dr Henze said something like: "Do you think the way things are in academia/your dpt is the right way? Because the way things are is the white way" 2/ https://www.academics4blacklives.com/day-5-whiteness-in-academia

As far as #Classics & Antiquity-related studies are concerned, the way things are remains, fundamentally and deeply, the white way. Given that, here are a few questions to mull over when thinking of your own dpt/uni/scholarly community 3/

How does the physical space of your uni/dpt (architecture, classroom layout, decorations, social spaces) convey whiteness? 4/

How does your dpt curriculum convey whiteness? 5/

How do your program language requirements - pre and post admission - convey whiteness?

How does your dpt/uni faculty and higher admin community + hierarchy convey whiteness?

How do your dpt/program/course descriptions convey whiteness?

How does your pedagogical practice, in and outside the classroom (including evaluations) convey whiteness?

How do your departmental social gatherings convey whiteness?

How does your overall departmental/uni/field hierarchy convey whiteness?

How does your current community building (lack of) work convey whiteness?

How does your departmental mental, social and broader support resources convey whiteness?

White colleagues, in #Classics and beyond: the current, harmful mess is ours to solve. Let's get our act together, let's get uncomfortable. Let's sit with that discomfort. Let's use that discomfort as a fuel to do real work, from the ground up. A step at a time.

Failing - or preferring not - to do so, means that solidarity statements and theorized panels and surveys and public performances of allyship are nothing but intellectualized, masturbatory, self-soothing devices, by and for the preservation of "the white way".
