Some news: Democracy Fund is no longer using “bipartisan” to describe our work. We are “declaring our independence” and will anchor our work firmly in our values. Our President, @JoeGoldman explains why in his latest blog post. #thread 1/ https://democracyfund.org/idea/why-democracy-fund-is-declaring-independence-from-bipartisanship/
Over the past 6 years, we have sought common ground between the left and right. But a commitment to “bipartisanship” above all else is untenable when political leaders openly embrace authoritarian politics & reject values like pluralism & the rule of law. 2/
Our role is to defend and strengthen our democracy, and champion the leaders who defend democracy and who challenge our political system to be more open and just, no matter their political affiliation. 3/
Democracy Fund’s work must be driven by evidence, learning & our core beliefs about what is essential to a healthy democracy. Here is what we believe: https://democracyfund.org/who-we-are/ 4/
We are prioritizing a commitment to DEI in all that we do. To challenge our democracy to be better, we must acknowledge that it has been intentionally designed to marginalize many — particularly Black and Brown people — since its founding. 5/
Our bipartisan positioning has too often been an excuse to not grapple with the deep injustice that is ingrained in our political institutions and system. We have also failed to do enough to acknowledge the structural racism that is built into philanthropy. 6/
We want to thank all of our partners and grantees who continue to help build a more open and just democracy. We look forward to continuing to learn and grow with you, and invite you to hold us accountable. 7/
