Okay... a few comments. 🤭
This ugliness certainly didn’t start with Trump, but he has done nothing but stoke the fires and allowed it to flourish. And the GOP stands by.
There are other issues that I feel like never get mentioned because of this insistence on an ongoing national narrative to cast the police as heroes, who are committed to the oath of “serve and protect.”
The “few bad apples” narrative is repeated ad nauseam. Following each case like this, and it doesn’t get nearly enough pushback. It’s largely ignored that the police force is not representative of a random sampling of people.
But there most certainly IS a certain “personality type” drawn to the police force. They are much more likely to be people who highly value “power and toughness” who have “generalized hostility” toward people, and who view the world through the lens of an authoritarian.
For example, I may find a couple bad apples in 200 people employed at a local Target or Walmart because it’s a much more randomized sampling of people. There’s not a certain “personality type” drawn to work in a retail store.
There have also been studies about the evolution (I’d say devolution) of their personalities after being on the job: they become more distrustful, cynical, prejudiced, and suspicious - always *expecting* criminal behavior.
With all of that as well as the fact that US police are woefully under trained in de-escalating situations in comparison with other countries like the UK, which is nonsensical considering that the US is a much larger country with a higher population and a gun culture
that the NRA and white supremacy militia groups support at all costs in the name of the 2nd amendment and perceive any attempt at regulation as infringing on their constitutional rights.
So US police have every reason to get comprehensive ongoing training in de-escalation. And yet they don’t.
