On objectivity and subjectivity and the past and future of journalism https://twitter.com/tomrosenstiel/status/1275773989873475589
I feel like I’ve dealt with these issues thoroughly as both an undergraduate history major and graduate student in history, because these are questions that historians have been wrestling with over the last century as well and writing an awful lot of theory about it.
That doesn’t mean I get it right. And historians disagree bitterly about these questions. But there’s a lot of reading to do. I have often felt that professionally trained journalists rather than intellectually trained historians have not done that reading.
Professionally trained journalists have 1000 skills that I lack, but in my transition to journalism I have been served well by my PhD in history.
And the journalists who do I think the best writing around these questions have clearly done a lot of reading.
