“Broadband and telephone companies, especially small ones, cannot continue to provide service without being paid" says @AjitPaiFCC
And how can people pay without jobs? Or get jobs without internet during a global pandemic? #DigitalDivide #COVID19 https://stopthecap.com/2020/06/23/internet-providers-get-ready-to-cut-off-past-due-customers-unless-they-agree-to-payment-plans/

This is disingenuous on so many levels. Pai & other ISP shills love to use small providers as a shield against all consumer protections.
But most people aren't served by small ISPs. And most ISPs are doing just fine for themselves right now. #DigitalDivide #COVID19

It's also worth mentioning -- this is a VOLUNTARY pledge. Any ISP is well within its powers to ignore it even without the pledge expiring.
So Pai's statement is little more than PR for co's about to cut people off from vital services during a crisis. #DigitalDivide #COVID19

Even with the pledge in effect, the FCC received hundreds of complaints from ppl whose internet was shut off.
Those are ppl who lost internet, AND THEN filed a formal complaint. Who knows how many lost service and *didn't* file. #DigitalDivide #COVID19 https://www.freepress.net/our-response/expert-analysis/explainers/people-are-losing-internet-service-midst-pandemic

That's why 830 groups signed a letter urging Congress to halt all utility shutoffs -- including broadband, water, and electricity -- during #COVID19.
These are life and death issues. No one should lose these critical services. #DigitalDivide https://www.freepress.net/news/press-releases/830-groups-urge-congress-halt-broadband-electricity-and-water-shutoffs-next

It's also why the #HEROESAct included (among other important measures, such as a $50 broadband affordability benefit) a moratorium on all utility shutoffs for those who can't afford service during #COVID19. #DigitalDivide https://www.freepress.net/news/press-releases/house-passes-heroes-act-providing-billions-emergency-funds-expanded-broadband
In short, the FCC's pledge to stop broadband shutoffs was always pretty toothless, but it's a special act of political cowardice to argue it should now "expire."
We need #NoShutoffs for utilities, point blank. #DigitalDivide #COVID19
