1)
I posed this question yesterday and got over 3K responses.
"What would our country be like if we put health and wellbeing and education and truth in all matters above profits?"
Lots of people responded by either naming another country or using words like heaven, utopia, etc
2)
Some suggested it would never be possible - often attributing this to Capitalism.
One poster said it would be like what we had when Ike was President. I like that answer because I believe it was true.
We didn't have an ideal country under Ike, but we had a much better one.
3)
Under Ike, we began working to address major social issues, including the "bomb". Things were open for discussion and debate. We were not polarized.
Under JFK, efforts for social justice increased. And then, we had a string of assassinations. Under LBJ civil rights legislation
4)
got passed. LBJ resigned rather than seek a second term. Vietnam sunk him and then we got Nixon. Under Nixon things started to change. We were no longer advancing on social justice and equality.
From that point on, things got steadily worse. The polarization got worse.
5)
And then we got Obama and for a minute hope sprung up all over the place and then someone dropped a safe/piano on our collective heads.
In the years since Ike, the Kochs and others like them began an organized movement to change this country. They did. They ultimately took
6)
over the Republican Party and even infiltrated the Democratic Party. Things came to a grinding halt and Obama was hamstrung.
And then in 2016 Putin stole the Presidency from the Kochs. Trump was elected and he began spreading hate and chaos. The Republicans decided to use him.
7)
They actually began getting the Kochs agendas legislated into law.
On the way to 2016, protections against abuse in the financial sector were removed (Clinton), the Voting Rights Act was allowed to expire (Bush), and the Supreme Court ruled on Citizens United (Obama).
8)
Those 3 things, more than anything else, changed us. They led to what we have now.
People seem to have forgotten just how much better off we were before all that.
As log as we were making progress, we had a kind of ideal government. Our country was moving forward and people's
9)
lives were getting better.
Since Ike, our enemies (namely Russia) have never stopped trying to disrupt us. They succeeded. We seem to have forgotten just how good we had it, even in a less than perfect country with all kinds of inequities and unfairness. We need to remember.
10)
We need to let go of ideological absolutes. This ain't about Capitalism or any other ism. It ain't about religion. It's about being fuked over.
If we take this country back in November we will have the opportunity to get back on track. We must allow ourselves that
11)
opportunity. We must Vote Blue No Matter Who. Then we must demand that our newly elected leaders clean house, including problems within their own party.
We must restore regulation of our financial industry, reenact the Voting Rights Act and correct Citizens United. We also
12)
need to get rid of the Electoral College and end the fuking Civil War once and for all.
And we need to hold Trump and the others accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
The 50s weren't Utopian here in the U.S., they were just better. We were able to move forward.
