The History of DBO - Daulat Beg Oldi

As most of us heard about DBO in NEWS in last couple of weeks, many want to know about it. We are here to explain history. So let's begin.(1/n)
DBO is place which is less than 10 km from border(LAC). Situated at 16500+ ft height and world's highest airfield.
In July of 1962, the great ,then Sqn Ldr Chandrakant Shantaram Raje of Indian Air Force landed Fairchild C-119 packet at DBO making World record.(2/n)
For those who know little bit about Airplanes, can understand how difficult it is to cross mountains of Karakoram which are even 18500+ ft in height. Fairchild was modified by HAL for this mission.(3/n)
Indian Air Force pilots, after this achievement, regularly kept flying to DBO from 1962 to 1965. But earthquake in Ladakh destroyed runway to some extent.(4/n)
After this incident, DBO was not used for 43 years and surprisingly even government never thought in this direction even when we know how important it is in a strategic way as it is near to LAC.(5/n)
In year 2008, Air Marshal PK Barbora, AOC-in-C Western Command was one of the first officer who thought about reconstructing DBO Airfield. He started working in that direction without informing political leadership.(6/n)
He planned taking AN-32 himself. Now AN-32 has limit that it can reach 14800 ft and DBO was at 16500+ ft. But as we know, nobody can stop our heros. He took permission of Air chief marshal and Army chief.(7/n)
As he got permission,He alongside with 4 others took off from Chandigarh at 0500 hour and reached DBO at around 0900 hour. Lt General Bhardwaj was there to welcome him. Now,it was difficult to takeoff but our great boys done that. It was very difficult for Beijing offcourse(8/n)
Now, as of today, DBO airfield is completely active with regular operations.

We salute our brave boys.

Jai Hind
