I compared the Coronavirus outbreak in the US against the outbreaks in all of the countries that border China, are near China or are travelled to a lot by people from China. To compare Trump's scapegoating against actual data.

What about OUR neighbors?
Either China, as Trump says, is to blame for the magnitude of the Covid outbreak here. A virus you'd think would affect similar countries (e.g. location in the world, population, economic profile) similarly.

Or a pandemic that started in China happened. And we're an outlier.
Let's compare America to our next door neighbors.

USA (pop. 331 mil)
Cases per million population: 7,325
Deaths per million: 373

Canada (pop. 37 mil):
Cases per million: 2,702
Deaths per million: 224

Mexico (pop. 129 mil):
Cases per million: 1,485
Deaths per million: 181
Canada has a population that is about one-ninth of ours. But has about 4% of the Covid cases we have. And about 7% of the Covid deaths we have.

Mexico, for all of Trump's demonization of the country, has about 8% of our Covid cases. And 19% of our Covid deaths.
Any way you slice it, the US is an outlier in all of North America. We have, by far, the largest population in North America (although we're only two and a half times as large as Mexico is).
Cases per million population by North American country:
USA (7,325)
Panama (6,333)
Canada (2,702)
Dominican Republic (2,576)
Mexico (1,485)
Honduras (1,349)
Guatemala (812)
El Salvador (767)
Haiti (467)
Costa Rica (465)
Barbados (338)
Nicaragua (328)
St. Kitts and Nevis (282)
Cases per million population by North American country (continued):
USA (7,325)
Antigua & Barbuda (266)
The Bahamas (265)
St. Vincent & the Grenadines (261)
Dominica (250)
Jamaica (226)
Cuba (205)
Grenada (204)
Venezuela (147)
St. Lucia (103)
Trinidad & Tobago (88)
Belize (58)
Someone is going to say "but that's because we're testing more. Trump says we do the most testing in the history of ever!" So, let's look at a more objective stat: mortalities.

Mortalities per million population by North American Country:
USA (373)
Canada (224)
Mexico (181)
Mortalities per million population by North American Country (continued):
USA (373)
Panama (124)
Dominican Republic (62)
Honduras (40)
Guatemala (33)
Antigua and Barbuda (31)
The Bahamas (28)
Barbados (24)
El Salvador (17)
Nicaragua (11)
Haiti (8)
Cuba (8)
Trinidad and Tobago (6)
Mortalities per million population by North American Country (continued):
USA (373)
Belize (5)
Jamaica (3)
Costa Rica (2)
Venezuela (1)

Even if you factor in the possibility that not all nations are reporting accurately, we're still most likely a significant outlier.
When you compare the US to the other G7 countries, you find the closest comparisons in terms of the impact of Covid with how it has affected us. But the difference is that most of those countries aren't still getting new cases anywhere near as much as we are.
Covid in G7 countries:

USA
Cases per mil: 7,325
Mortalities per mil: 373
New cases yesterday: 36,015 (+1.49%)
New mortalities yesterday: 863 (+0.70%)

Canada
Cases per mil: 2,702
Mortalities per mil: 224
New cases yesterday: 326 (+0.32%)
New mortalities yesterday: 18 (+0.21%)
France
Cases per mil: 2,471
Mortalities per mil: 455
New cases yesterday: 517 (+0.32%)
New mortalities yesterday: 57 (+0.19%)

Germany
Cases per mil: 2,301
Mortalities per mil: 107
New cases yesterday: 659 (+0.34%)
New mortalities yesterday: 17 (+0.19%)
Italy
Cases per mil: 3,950
Mortalities per mil: 573
New cases yesterday: 113 (+0.05%)
New mortalities yesterday: 18 (+0.05%)

Japan
Cases per mil: 142
Mortalities per mil: 8
New cases yesterday: 52 (+0.29%)
New mortalities yesterday: 2 (+0.21%)
