Well said @jnsbstn. I have also been quiet thus far because I am struggling to put my feelings into words. https://twitter.com/jnsbstn/status/1275735189184970752
Reconciling the revelations of Jan's criminal activity with the man who encouraged me in my work, published my articles and wrote my references is an immensely painful process.
But his actions are awful and we must be clear that they absolutely have no place in the academy or society.
I have offered my support to my colleagues at Oxford and am available to help any current or former students that need anything - anything at all.
We must also reflect on how to move forward as an academy. Sexual abuse is too prevalent in our ranks, yet we have no co-ordinated way of responding in things like citations and societies.
I'd like to see a working group/workshop on this issue - one that is aimed at coming up with constructive guidelines for people to follow if the issue arises.
Maybe a clause in all societies codes of conduct permitting expulsion for actions like these. Maybe a symbol for citations to indicate that citation is unavoidable but the person's conduct is condemnable.
People will have better thoughts than me but my sense is that, to achieve far-reaching change, we must co-ordinate and work together.
