a lot of western neo-buddhists fail to make a distinction between 'Non-Being' (Mê on) and 'nothingness' (ouk on), thus leading to an utter confusion of apopathicism and profane 'atheism', i.e. of that which is 'beyond Being' and a simple 'privation of beingness'. Sad.
they forget that at the end of the buddhist via negativa stands the 'voidness of the void' (sunyatasunyata), the Ultimate Reality which is 'empty of all emptiness', i.e. supereminant Plentitude, also described as the 'Clear Light of the Spirit' (Dionysius' 'Dazzling Obscurity')
According to the esoteric doctrine of Shen-Tong it is said that 'while the Immutable Nature [i.e. Paramarthasatya, 'The Supreme Truth'] is empty of passing impurities which are alien to it, it is not void of qualities which are not-different from it' (Gyud-Lama).
when Buddhists talk about 'Nothing', they are much closer to Eckhart's 'luiter nihts', which is not 'nothing' but merely 'no thing', the Hyperessential Nothingness of God, which supereminently contains all qualities, than to the profane atheism of most western practicioners.
"Got in sîn selbes bekantnisse bekennet sich selben in im selbem" (God is Knowledge knowing it-Self by it-Self), says Eckhart, which is not far from the 'Superme Self' (paramatman) of the Ratnagotravibhāga, i.e. the "Wisdom which knows itself by itself" of the Tibetan texts.
"Westerners often think of the Nirgunabrahman as merely a vague 'thing' lacking all quality and on which they project their own mental void; instead of 'Nothing' they meditate in fact on 'nothing at all' at the risk of losing themselves in the indefinite ocean of informal states"
In summa: Western 'neo-buddhist' truely are 'nastikas' (nothing-more-ists) and 'sunyavadin' (sectarians of the void); as Nagarjuna said: "the Voidness wrongly understood destroys the dull intelligence, like a clumsily held snake or an ill-worked spell".
