Just offhand, 20% of people needing some sort of external intervention when getting coronavirus is quite scary. However, you see that 80% (that’s the high end, some other studies saw 20%) of people who get it have no symptoms
It likely explains why people see it as this huge threat yet not a threat at the same time. How can you fear something in which 80% of people consider to be nothing to a mild cold/fever. How can you relax at something that might put you on oxygen.
If this was say, Ebola or even a common cold, I bet it’s much better contained. People who are actively displaying symptoms are staying home. People who are about to display symptoms will eventually stay home. With Covid, can go through entire virus cycle no symptoms
It’s a very hard problem to solve because of how variable this virus is. There’s no solution besides the masks and distancing. You can’t compare it to the flu or even a bad flu season, you can’t minimize it, you can’t live in fear of it
It’s tough because the news cycle will have most people minimizing or acting irrationally afraid of it. People have been saturated with that news for 4 months now. I don’t think it’s realistic mentally, physically, or economically to have mandated quarantine again
I do think it’s realistic for people to limit their inner circle or those would share their space. You’re not going to socially distance with family, loved ones, and very close friends but you will do it with acquaintances and general friends. That might be new normal.
I know I’m all over the place rn. I think the biggest toll in all of this is that quarantine has showed you need diverse human contact to remain sane. Even the ones that want to lock down for months will eventually yearn for it.
How can you fight against something that attacks the fundamental nature of who we are?
One last thing: I notice seem somewhat bitter that the protests aren’t resulting in a massive death spike. That line of thought is fascinating. From what I recall those same people bitter were likely protesting quarantine by wanting a haircut.
All it shows is that people need to be outside. You can stay home all you want but you won’t be able to keep it up for months.
