Can we PLEASE get rid of this unhealthy unspoken law that if performers aren’t living & breathing their career 24/7 then they’re not committed????
More so now than ever, it is clear that performers NEED a life outside of the industry in order to survive!

Since the age of 4, performers are taught that giving anything less than 110% is not good enough. Personally I found this incredibly difficult to adjust to after graduating from drama school!!! Because it’s a completely unrealistic expectation

Performing is a JOB!!
That means you are entitled to be paid for work you do, to have a holiday without feeling guilty, to have hobbies & interests outside of your career - just the same as any other career choice. These things don’t make you any less able to do the job.

A month after graduating, having given MONTHS of notice, I took a 4 day trip to the Ed Fringe (not exactly a holiday lol) An audition came up & this is the response I received from my agent when I turned it down. I had told them MONTHS in advance that I was taking 4 DAYS OFF

When I pointed out that as a performer having good mental wellbeing is key & that I was taking 4 days off after a stressful 3rd year, I was told that if I had mental health problems I should have raised them before??

I’m not bringing this up to shame a previous agent. I bringing this up because this rhetoric
HAS
TO
CHANGE
This is not an anomaly - this is the norm! I can list COUNTLESS exchanges that I or fellow performers have experienced like this.

New grads tend to get it worse because you’re not taught any better! You’re taught to take any opportunity, no matter the consequences.Having time to reflect can be a blessing in disguise. Our industry is in disarray & who knows when we’ll get to perform again, but when we do
