This is what’s happening now over on Facebook live. ⁦ @ManduReid⁩ and ⁦ @sairish_hussain⁩ on the (unasked for)burden of representing entire communities and getting it right.
“We should be entitled to nuance”
“Colonialism racism are not the only things we face - we deal with real life too. Addiction bereavement. It was really liberating to write about what I wanted to write about.”
“I didn’t want white people to say ‘look how exotic this is’. Mangos and Saris blowing in the wind. I wanted to normalise it. It’s a small example but I didn’t italicise words in Urdu.”
Mandu - “me and Zahra would have great conversations. She’s be a brilliant political candidate.”
Mandu - “I realised I have been processing racism on a very cerebral level. This time for some reason I really allowed myself to feel. BLM are dismantling the idea that leadership needs to be a hero figure, macho.”
Mandu - that’s changing and will be a challenge for the status quo. Instead there’s a more communal -female type leadership. It brings real optimism.
“It’s more subversive to present black joy”
Mandu” This book is subversive it’s radical it dismantles the idea of women from certain backgrounds being pigeonholed and only framed within a very narrow lens”
We totally agree. Thanks so much to @sairish_hussain and @ManduReid. If you missed the chat we’ll tell you where to find it shortly.
