24/06 Scottish Coronavirus briefing thread.
Our Lady of Incessant Resentment is due up soon.
Will she explain why she hasn't bothered to read the scientific advice on distancing from top UK scientists or will it be more waffle? Place your bets.
Apparently we are getting key important dates for easing lockdown today. Businesses are desperate. I hope there is good news for them.
It's the Scottish Parliament's final full week in session before the holidays. Will anyone miss them?
4 new deaths today. RIP. Condolences to their families.
Deaths in care homes are still making up almost half of all deaths recorded. This is a disease in care homes and hospitals in Scotland now in the main.
The fabled R number is apparently between 0.6 and 0.8. There is no reason therefore to keep businesses from trading.
Interesting. They think there are 2000 infectious people in Scotland. That's 0.03% of the population and mostly concentrated in certain areas. You would struggle to catch Covid in most areas of Scotland at the moment.
"Blended learning is a necessary contingency"
Why don't they call it what it is? Part-time schooling.
The Route Map has been updated!
She is saying that she will get the report next week and update by 2nd July but then also says she wants to give us a special update on 3 areas. Reading between lines, these are the things that are going to happen but it's not politically the right time to announce them.
She's indicating:
1. They will move to 1m distancing "safely"
2. They will go to 'mandatory' on face masks.
3. Businesses will need to take names and contact details of customers and store them.
Why not just announce these plans now? They are going to try to implement these things anyway. I say 'try' because mandatory means the same as in England. Recommended but not set in law.
Indicative dates coming now but she stresses these depend on suppression of virus. Nightmare for business.
On 3rd July, you'll be allowed to travel more than 5 miles for leisure and recreation purposes.
Which most people have been doing anyway.
You can also stay in self-contained holiday accommodation from 3rd July. She has just green-lighted holidays to take place right across Scotland. The island communities will not be happy about this.
BEER GARDENS ARE ALLOWED TO OPEN on 6th July (maybe). What happened to the breathing issue? Did they find out breathing was OK after all. Thank god, I've been holding my breath for nearly a week!
From 10th July, people will be allowed to meet other people outdoors with physical distancing. I thought we already were. I follow this stuff and even I'm confused.
Organised outdoor sports for young people can resume from 14th July. Are they just making this up as they go along now?
We're going to need a bigger house!
Up to 3 households can meet indoors from 15th July subject to physical distancing.
That could be 12 people all trying to stay 2m apart?
Prepare the hall cupboard for grandpa, he's going to need a safe space.
I'm hearing Benny Hill music now.
I'm getting this strange sense of deja vu. This seems to be exactly the same advice that Boris set out yesterday, almost to the letter.
Pubs and restaurants can open on a limited basis. Guidance will follow. Many will look at this, look at their books and think, it's not worth re-opening.
Hairdressers to open on 15 July. Thank goodness. Nippy's hair has been looking a right mess hasn't it? Oh wait, no it hasn't 😏
"Let me be frank"
Why does she always want to be Frank.
Is it something to do with their Gender Recognition Bill?
She needs a beret.
A leaflet is going to every household about 'Test & Protect'. Interested to see costs on that.
The takeaway for me from this statement is that she could easily announce these measures now. There is no need to wait for a scientific report which will give exactly the same findings as the UK report. This delay of a week will cost jobs and maybe even lives.
Let's see if Carlaw can hit her with a zinger? No, he's supporting her. How nice of him. He's looking subdued today. Very subservient tone. Asking for the report to be published earlier. Why doesn't he ask why she's not using the advice already there from UK Govt.
Is Carlaw OK? He seems to be struggling with his questions. He's asking her to act more quickly on 2m, but still hasn't asked why she isn't following UK Govt advice. It's like he misses the mark every time. It's a gift of a question and allows her to act like Chief Saviour.
NS says evidence from her advisory committee won't answer all questions but will allow her to study it.
At the risk of being repetitive, why hasn't she studied the advice already available by some of the best scientists in the world, which would allow her to take judgement now?
There is something not right here with Carlaw. What's going on? Something is afoot.
The SNP guide to wriggling out of a u-turn.
1. Pretend your original position was a contingency.
2. See point 1.
Did Carlaw just call her 'The Burst Minister"?
I like it.
Hope it sticks.
Oh this is pointless. None of the opposition are landing a single blow on her. In fact, they are aiding her.
Over and out, well done if you got to the end without digging your eyeballs out with sharpened chopsticks.
