Blind people need to stop taking over the BLM hashtag and turning it into blind lives matter. Yes, we experience discrimination. But we are not at risk of experiencing police brutality like black people are.
There are some really valid discussions surrounding police violence directed at disabled people of color which @HabenGirma wrote about. But as a white blind person, my life isn't at risk, and to take over that hashtag minimises the seriousness of the situation.
When people say black lives matter they aren't saying blind lives, white lives, disabled lives don't matter. It's a statement about the disregard so many people in power have for the lives of black people. Please go and read what black people are writing about this.
The reality is as a blind person I do face discrimination, and some of those issues such as employment and education overlap with that experienced by other groups. But how many white blind people are being murdered by the police every year? How many are treated like criminals?
It seems incredibly selfish and dismissive to take over such a hashtag and twist it to imply that what we are experienceing is remotely the same. It isn't, and we should be out here supporting black people not shouting that we have it worse.
