The Gaelic "uinneag" might look it's using the diminutive -ag suffix we see in lots of other words (like caileag, piseag, and lots of names), but it's not. It in fact comes from an extremely dramatic old Norse word, vindauga, which means "wind's eye".
That's also where the Scots "winnock" and English "window" come from. The Old English name was "fenester", from the Latin - which is still where most European languages get the name - even Swedish uses "fönster" these days.
So the modern Norwegian "vindu", Gaelic "uinneag", English "window" and Scots "winnock" are a clear insight into the linguistic influence the Vikings had across Ireland the British Isles.
