A crisis quickly shows us what’s most important. Teachers everywhere seem to have reached the following conclusions
1. The curriculum is ridiculously packed and too often has led to spoon feeding children in order to race through content. 1/7
2. In primary school particularly the focus would have been better spent on getting children really secure in the basics, then investing the rest of the time in teaching them now to look after their mental health and be independent, curious, resilient learners. 2/7
3. If we had been afforded more time to cultivate learning attributes, like the ones @guyclaxton has been championing for years, children’s education would have been less negatively affected by this crisis 3/7
During this crisis the things we have turned to for our own mental health are exercise, nature, cooking, family, music and art. Why are these things not afforded importance in our curriculum? I had high hopes that one of the positives to come out of this crisis would be....4/7
a complete overhaul of the curriculum. Stripping out all of the unnecessary content which creates stress and makes learning feel like a coverage task rather than a pleasure, creating a programme which encourages children to be critical consumers of knowledge, to question sources,
understand the relevance of politics, challenge inequalities and care about not just their own wellbeing but the mental health of the community they live in. To play, laugh and appreciate nature. To explore, take risks and to take their time. 6/7
Unfortunately I saw online yesterday that the UK government have decided to spend millions of pounds, not on developing a new curriculum which reflects all we’ve learned from this crisis, but to create 1000s of online lessons based on the old one. 😫 7/7 #timeforchange
