I'm not a fan of Luiz and would rather move on. But, I think I understand the logic *puts reinforced tin hat on*.
It’s one year - possibly on revised terms, who knows given it’s gone down to the wire - and he’s an experienced hand of the kind Saliba will really need. On and off the pitch. Arteta likes him.
Not universally bad either - far too error prone, yes, but he can be very good too on his day.
And what would an experienced, 25-year-old replacement cost? Sensational central defenders are hard to find and massively expensive.
And we don’t have that kind of money. We need to sell central defenders to raise money - and it makes sense to try to offload Mustafi and Sokratis first (for some money).
So in summary, lots of things round this smell bad, and he does represent the past rather than the future. But I’m just trying to see the logic, and that might be it.
