Today, @unisontheunion is launching 'Care After Covid: A Vision for Social Care' which sets out how the fragmented, crisis-riven care sector could be transformed into a national care system.
'Care after Covid' explains why we need a care sector with better staff pay, UK-wide professional standards, robust workers’ rights, and strategic long-term investment. Our long-term aim should be to create a resilient care system similar to the NHS
Social care should be viewed as *both* an essential public service and an important economic sector, providing high-quality, well-paid jobs. Demand for care is on the rise. Let's make it work for everyone
Care work requires high levels of skill and commitment. Everyone working in the care sector should undergo a minimum level of training to drive professionalisation and raise standards.
We can't create a national care service overnight but that should be our target. In the short term, councils responsible for sourcing care should only purchase services from providers who pay taxes, recognise unions, provide staff with contracts & pay at least real living wage
Never again should vulnerable people die in care because of poor planning or a failure to understand the sector. We need fundamental reform to create an integrated system fit for the future, providing care for everyone who needs it
