Story of many Indian immigrants: My friend Rohan did his undergrad at a top engineering college in India and moved to US to do his masters at Stanford. After his masters, he joined a reputed tech company and has been working with them for 2 years now. [1/N] https://twitter.com/blekhman/status/1275243184914915331
Rohan is on H1-B. He is likely to be stuck in an incessant loop of H1Bs for the foreseeable future. He has applied for a green card but do you know that there is *atleast a 12 year* wait for Indian immigrants applying for a green card on EB2 category.

In fact, this wait for a green card can go up to *50 years* for Indian immigrants as per recent news articles https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/the-employment-green-card-backlog-tops-800000-most-of-them-indian-a-solution-is-elusive/2019/12/17/55def1da-072f-11ea-8292-c46ee8cb3dce_story.html. This means there is a good chance that Rohan may have to be on the H1-B visa for his entire life (or until he chooses to remain in the US). [3/N]
Any impact on H1B would affect Rohan and his family here who are all law abiding citizens, pay taxes on time, and contribute to the economy. He has no prior criminal records, has graduated at the top 1% of his class through out, and has been doing amazingly well at his job. [4/N]
Inspite of being brilliant, hard-working, highly qualified, law abiding, tax paying individuals, Rohan and countless other Indian immigrants like him are stuck in endless loops of visa related bureaucracies. This is brutal, discouraging, and exhausting to say the least! [5/N]
Oh, another gut wrenching truth -- did you know that immigrants *routinely* face situations where they can't even go back to their home countries to attend the funerals of their closest family members due to visa related difficulties?? [6/N]
Inspite of going through insane levels of emotional and professional difficulties, most immigrants persist. They put their head down and get to work. They rarely complain and follow rules to the dot. [7/N]
Inspite of dealing with all these hassles, they somehow still manage to create new jobs and be the backbone of American innovation. It is ridiculous to make the bar for immigration so high that even the most highly qualified individuals fail to meet it. [8/N]
This immigration situation happening with Indian as well as other immigrants is UNFAIR!! People who form such an integral part of this economy cannot be treated as outsiders. [N/N]
PS It should come as no surprise that many of the immigrants subject to these kinds of immigration processes will never get to vote! So, they contribute to economy and innovation, and share all the responsibilities of local citizens. But, they are never guaranteed basic rights.
