Portland: PLEASE SUPPORT #PortlandProtests ! (Thread)

city council still won’t listen to THOUSANDS who demanded they dismantle PPB.

The most direct action: ONLY if you’re able, safe, & understand the risk, go to the Justice Center. More numbers, more pressure.

If you can’t...
Here’s another trustworthy fund that’s focused on BIPOC and trans protesters, who have higher bails and are more vulnerable in jail:
A few journalists are out almost every night, when big news outlets lost interest long ago. Follow and donate. PPB targets them for documenting brutality. Share the footage they risk their safety for.

Another group risking their safety and being deliberately targeted by PPB: @NLG_Portland legal observers, who not only document police abuse, but provide jail support for those who get arrested. Follow and donate if you can.
Don’t have money or stuff to donate? Contact the city council!

It can be dicey singling out specific Black and indigenous activists on twitter, but do a search right now through the #portlandprotest tag. Also follow/check out rts from @pdxgdc, @PopMobPDX, @CAIROregon, and @PNWYLF, who have all been consistently amplifying local bipoc voices.
Read this excellent thread of reporting from @alex_zee about PPB’s brutality in recent decades. PPB has murdered at least 83 people since 1992 and has been investigated by the Justice Department for their excessive force. https://twitter.com/alex_zee/status/1271541703749459968?s=21
And if you find all this overwhelming and would like to start learning about police abolition and dismantling our prison state, start with #8toAbolition https://www.8toabolition.com
You could also send some support to our Black neighbors through @blackresiliency, which is helping Black families in Portland pay bills, get groceries, etc.
Ok to recap: we need Portland to stay in this. Show up, donate, amplify, make noise. The city council received over 63,000 emails about this, the vast majority supporting defunding PPB. Yet there are only a couple hundred people at the Justice Center. Not everyone can do that...
but everyone can do something, everyone can do a little every day. If you can’t protest, use your voice and your $$ in support of defunding PPB. Remember that by definition, it can never be fully legal or fully peaceful to resist police.
It is not legal to resist unjust laws, but it is right. If you wonder what you’d have done in 1930s Germany, the answer is whatever you’re doing now. We can’t all be loud but we can all contribute. If you were among the thousands who demanded defunding, don’t stop demanding now.
We know this is a change Portland wants. Help it grow. It’s not just angry white teens, protesters are people of all ages, ethnicities, backgrounds. Lawyers, medics, and journalists show up every night despite risks, bc they know it’s where they’re needed. 63k+ wrote. Keep going.
